St. Mary’s Families,

We wanted to take this opportunity to address the school violence threat made against Van Wert today. Let us start by stating that at NO TIME was there ever a direct threat made towards St. Mary’s School. Our school administration were contacted around 6am by the Van Wert Police Department and were made aware of the situation, Van Wert PD also kept us informed throughout the day on the matter. We decided that it was in the best interest of our student to cancel classes for the day so that we could fully address the threat. Our faculty and staff were made aware of the threat early this morning and were kept aware of progress throughout the morning.

In regards to this threat, the Van Wert PD conduct an investigation that has lead to a juvenile being charged and arrested. A second threat has since been made towards Crestview Schools via social media. This investigation is currently still ongoing and when there is any information to share, we will be informed by Van Wert police department.

As always, our students safety is a top priority for us at St. Mary’s and we take all measures to ensure that safety. Our faculty and staff go through several trainings every year in conjunction with Van Wert PD as well conduct school wide lockdown drills. Because of the recent events we wanted to make you aware that there will be an increased law enforcement presence around the school. Van Wert Police, Van Wert Highway Patrol, and the Van Wert Sheriff Department will be working together to offer extra security for St. Mary’s.

As of 3:45pm, Thursday Feb. 22 we will be in session tomorrow Friday Feb. 23. We encourage you take this time to talk with your children about the importance of letting an adult know any time they may hear someone make a threat of violence. Also discuss with them that no matter how upset you get, violence is never an answer. We encourage you to take some time and pray with your children for our society to become a safer place for us to live in.

If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to contact the school office.

God Bless,
Dan Metzger
